BEHIND THE NUMBERS
How are wardrobe impact estimates calculated?
MorningPick multiplies an assumed material footprint by an estimated garment weight. The result is an indicative model value in kilograms of CO₂e, not a measurement of your garment or a verified lifecycle assessment.
What goes into the calculation?
Estimated CO₂e = material coefficient × estimated garment weight. Both values come from fixed assumptions in the app. They do not come from a manufacturer’s product declaration.
| Example | Calculation | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton T-Shirt | 15 kg CO₂e/kg × 0.20 kg | 3 kg CO₂e |
| Wool Coat | 30 kg CO₂e/kg × 1.50 kg | 45 kg CO₂e |
What happens when details are missing?
An unrecognised material uses 12 kg CO₂e per kilogram of fabric; an unrecognised garment type uses 0.40 kg. Correcting a category or material can therefore change the estimate. Mixed fabrics are not modelled as a weighted blend.
What does the score mean?
The score combines assumptions about material intensity with recorded wear frequency. It is an app indicator for exploring your habits, not a sustainability certification. More check-ins can change the score without changing the estimated production footprint.
What are the limitations?
- Actual weight, manufacturing location and energy source are not measured.
- The model does not calculate a complete lifecycle, including your washing, transport and disposal.
- It does not establish emissions saved by wearing, sharing or selling an item.
- Items with the same details receive the same estimate, even when they are different garments.
These are MorningPick’s product assumptions, not externally validated findings. For the distinction between a simple estimate and a full product assessment, see the GHG Protocol Product Standard.
